If it’s time for new shingles for your home’s roof, you probably are already doing some research about roofing shingles, roofing contractors and other roofing materials available in your area. It will come as no surprise that roofing shingle materials have different levels of protection and quality. We are certain you have learned that not all shingle manufacturers are the same and that local roofing contractors must be chosen carefully!
When you have a new roof installed, it should be exactly what you were expecting when you signed your local roofer’s contract. That’s why Astro Roofing in Volusia County has highlighted 3 mistakes you can make when choosing your new roof. Read more:
Don’t assume all shingles are just shingles
In the United States, asphalt shingles are mostly fiberglass-based and are manufactured with mat composed entirely of glass fibers of varying lengths and orientations. This fiberglass base is then surfaced with a specially-formulated asphalt coating, followed by weather-resistant mineral granules.
Most asphalt shingles come in a wide variety of color and design options so it is important to talk to your chosen roofer to decide what is right for not only your home, but what you find most appealing. In terms of shingle type, there are three design categories: Three-tab (also called Standard or Strip shingles), Dimensional (also called Laminate or Architectural shingles) and Premium shingles.
- Strip Shingles are the original and the most basic of roofing shingles available in the industry. They are single layered roofing shingles that are generally designed to look like slate. Strip shingles have a very flat appearance and are usually very lightweight and often used on lower priced homes. Advances in technology means that better choices in shingles are available to you today, the homeowner.
- Dimensional Shingles are now the most popular roofing shingles installed in North America. Dual layered products (or multi-layered in some instances) they provide a thicker and richer appearance on the roof (a multi-dimensional look). These shingles are also (typically) heavier in weight than strip shingles and usually have improved warranty protections, which can range from 30-years to Lifetime. Very important in eastern Florida!
- Premium Shingles are laminated shingles that have an upgraded appearance from traditional dimensional shingles. They may look like more like natural slate or shake shingles. Some are also impact resistant which can protect the shingle from hail-storms and possibly extend the life of the roofing system. Depending on your roofing budget, this choice can be beautiful protection for your home.
Assuming all roofers install your roof the same way
This is a big mistake some homeowners make: they hire a “standard” or “discount” roofer to install their shingled roof instead of hiring a certified expert who has proven experience working with these materials.
